What should you report about the water heater?
Describe a visible leak, reduced hot water or an unfamiliar noise without opening or adjusting the unit. ENERGY STAR names leaking water and lack of hot water among signs that a water heater may be failing or need significant repair. Those signs do not establish which part has failed or whether repair or replacement is appropriate. Tell the plumber when the change began and what you can safely observe.
What if water is near gas or electrical equipment?
Stay away from wet electrical equipment and do not handle gas lines, switches or heater controls to diagnose the issue. If someone is in immediate danger, leave and call 911. Ready.gov says households should learn where the main house water valve is, but this page does not ask anyone to enter an unsafe area or operate unfamiliar equipment. The Baton Rouge call line is not active, and no urgent response is promised.
How should a plumber distinguish repair from replacement?
Ask what was inspected, what the provider found and what work it proposes. ENERGY STAR discusses leaks and changes in hot-water availability as possible reasons to consider a replacement assessment, not proof that one is needed. Any service agreement is between you and the independent provider.
Who verifies licensing?
Ask for the plumber's name, applicable license and insurance. Check the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana licensed-plumber route yourself. This site does not inspect water heaters or verify an individual provider.
